Flowers from this Spring: Taken by me, of course!

Although I’m about to go make some more mini blueberry pies, I decided I’d write a short and sweet blog post first.

In 7th and 8th grade, my English teachers required our class to have a blog. On this blog, we were to write about books we had read, do polls, compose pieces based on a certain topic, or just write about whatever we felt like. It was a blog. Earlier this year, I found my 7th and 8th grade English blog. I guess finding that blog inspired me to make this one.

A lot of kids in my grade have Tumblrs, but I didn’t want a Tumblr. I already have a Facebook account, and I din’t need another website distracting me from my studies. However, now that it’s summer, I have no tests or quizzes (except the driving test, which I hope to take later this summer!) and no more mounds of homework keeping me up until 2 am. Therefore, I created a blog. I thought it’d be a neat idea to just write my thoughts from the day, etc. etc.

I actually write for a city-wide teen newspaper in my hometown, but the back to school issue doesn’t come out until August. Additionally, even though the newspaper has a blog, I really wanted to write without edits. (As in, just write down random stuff kind of like a summer journal.)

By the way, I do plan on writing about some of my summer adventures for that blog.

On another note:

Yesterday, I saw Kung Fu Panda 2! I loved it, and thought it was fantastic. The animations were incredible, and the plot line was thoughtful and even my parents loved it as much as my little sister did! I strongly recommend seeing this movie, and hopefully you’ll find it funny (the type that makes you actually laugh aloud) and sweet (perhaps some tears will even form at the corner of your eyes).

Anyways, this blog is now a week and a day old, and now I’m going to go make some pie and then head off to the pool! Oh, and here’s the link to the 7/8 grade blog if you want to take a peek, and please do!: http://wordpress.lovett.org/sedlovett13/

P.S.–> My first trip is this weekend so get ready to hear all about that!

Welcome, Weekend!

Ahh the weekend. Two days that are normally just as stressful as the week…. minus the school uniforms. But, it’s summer, so today was fabulous. So, I’ve decided that it’s about time for another blog post; in fact, I’m overdue for another blog post.

Okay, so here’s what I’m going to blog about tonight. Are you ready?

CABLE

Yes, you read it right, that did say “CABLE.”

Ever since this afternoon, the TV in the den (aka the family room for those of you who don’t call it a den) and in my parents room have both been acting strange. Not strange as in growing hair and singing to me, but strange as in BROKEN. I tried everything: turning off the TV for a few minutes, waiting patiently while it attempted to “load”…. but nothing seemed to work.

The TV would turn on and off just fine, but the cable was just not working. On Demand? Nope, still not working. Trying different channels? Sure, it’d be okay for a minute, but then the images would pixelate and then disappear completely into black nothingness…. and then reappear in choppy intervals, and then repeat that process over and over again.

We should probably call the Comcast people, but on a holiday weekend, nobody’s going to be around. Any ideas on other ways to fix the cable issue?

Let’s do this. DAY 2.

Well, my blog is now in it’s second day of life. Yes! As I wrestle with what to write about as American Idol plays in the background, I want to share something my friend posted on Facebook. (Yes, the person who made the picture did spell “died” wrong….)

Anyway, I find history fascinating for the most part, so I loved “Titanic.” For those of you who don’t know, Leonardo Di Caprio co-stars in this film, and he also stars in a more recent movie, “Inception.” In order to not give away a spoiler, I’ll leave it at this: Di Caprio ends in water in one movie, and begins in water in the next. Even though they are two different movies, it’s still pretty funny to think of this as a movie within a movie.

So, I challenge any of you who may be reading this post to comment below: give your opinions of the movies and whether you think this picture is cool or not! Also, feel free to comment saying anything you might want me to write about.

Today’s Special: Mini Blueberry Pies

Today marks the first day of this blog’s existence. Happy birthday, blog! It also happens to be a day when I slept in, stayed in my pajamas until noon, and didn’t stress about anything. You guessed it, I’m on summer vacation.

For a while now, I’ve been wanting to bake a pie. But, school and all my other extracurricular activities usually get in the way of that. Not today. Today, I baked four mini blueberry pies. And don’t worry, I’m not just going to tell you how delicious they were, I’m actually going to give you the recipe.

————

What you will need:

-1 pint (or a box) of fresh blueberries (remember to wash them!)

- 1/3 cup of all-natural pure cane sugar

- 2 tablespoons of flour

- 2 teaspoons of lemon juice

- 1 teaspoon of cornstarch

- a dash of cinnamon

- a little bit of butter or an egg

- 2 ready-to-bake rolled pie crusts

- 4 mini casserole dishes

- PAM baking spray

- a fork

- an oven

These mini delights are actually simple to make. First, pre-heat your oven on “Bake” to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.  Spray the mini casserole dishes (if you don’t have these, then cupcake tins will do) with PAM and spread the PAM around with a paper towel so it covers the entire inside surface of the dish. Place the rolled pie crust (that you’ve cut slightly larger than the perimeter of the dish you’re using) inside the dish. There should be crust hanging over the sides. Poke a couple tiny holes in the bottom of the crust with a fork.

(At this time, go ahead and use the dish you are using as a “cookie cutter” to cut the remaining pieces of crust into a perfectly sized round shape for the top.)

Mix the blueberries, sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, cornstarch, and flour together. Then, spoon that blueberry mixture  into the dishes (remember to check that you already rolled the crust into them) and fill them up to the top, or right below the top. Place the round shaped piece of crust on top of the blueberry mixture and pinch the sides so they blend together with the sides of the bottom crust that are hanging over the edge of the dish.

Now comes the egg wash. Alright, I actually forgot about the egg wash and did a butter wash instead. Oops. But the mini pies survived and turned out wonderfully! Anyway, either do a normal egg wash (crack an egg and whisk it with a little milk; then brush it over the top of your pie crusts) or a butter wash like I did (melt some butter and brush it over the top of the pie crusts.) Either way, your pies will be fine. :)

Place your masterpieces in the oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 25 minutes, or until the crust is a light golden brown and you can see the blueberries bubbling. When your pies are cooked, take them out of the oven using oven mitts (I really, really hope you don’t forget that a. the pies are in the oven and will burn eventually and b. the pies will be hot so be careful!) and turn off the oven. Let the pies cool and enjoy!

So, this might not have been the most interesting blog post you’ve ever seen. (Although I hope you try the recipe!) But, hey, don’t leave yet! It’s only the very beginning of summer, and therefore many adventures that have yet to unfold into reality. As summer goes on, I’ll have more to write about. For now, I’m just relaxing and enjoying the first week of summer!
